Nothing says spring like fresh strawberries! Yum! This was such a delicious batch from Costco. They always have the best strawberries and we eat them like crazy. I think we devoured about half of the flat that I bought just in the first day.
After the long drive home we still needed to get groceries so I took the girls and headed off to Costco for some milk and fresh produce. The girls got a drink and everyone was happy. As much as I love vacationing, it's always good to get home and back to routines.
Surprise! We woke up to several inches of fresh snow this morning. Allen flew in late last night so the kids were so thrilled to have some daddy time. We bundled up in our makeshift snow gear, borrowed from G & G and spent a good part of the morning playing in the snow - snowball fights, jumping on the trampoline, etc. It was so much fun. It didn't stop snowing all day we ended up with about 12 inches! A surprise way to end our "spring" break!
Today Grandma took us to a fun place called the Makery. We got a little cake decorating lesson and then we each got a cake to decorate. It was so much fun learning how to use all of the different tips and making and designing our cakes. Grandma always has such fun and creative ideas!
The kids had a fun morning on their treasure hunt from Lucky the Leprechaun! He had them running all over the house and left some tricky clues this year! This year he left crazy St. Pat's sunglasses, fun light up pens and gold candy, of course!
Grandma reading to the girls tonight before bed! The main reason I love coming to Denver for our spring break is for all the one-on-one time my kiddos get with their grandparents. It's hard to juggle time between all the grandchildren during our trips there in the summer so it's great to have grandma and grandpa do the little things - like bedtime reading routines every night!
Today was a crazy day and Addie was completely off schedule. She took her nap really late and slept until about 6:00 p.m. Needless to say, she was wide awake long after the big kids were in bed. She enjoyed some great time with grandma eating snacks and playing while everyone else slept!
The weather in Denver today was very spring like indeed. The kids spent hours this afternoon playing in the yard enjoying the gorgeous weather. Carter discovered Box Elder bugs and spent forever catching and playing with them. Such a boy!
I spent the majority of my day doing laundry, cleaning and packing for our spring break trip to Denver. It is truly amazing to me how much stuff our little family requires for a trip. Clothes, shoes, toiletries, pack n play, cameras, snacks, toys/books/movies for everyone, piano music, etc. These are all our necessities before loading up the car the afternoon to make the drive to Denver! It's all worth it for a week with Grandma and Grandpa!
This is what happens when your mom is up very late at night and can't get out of bed on time in the morning. She takes the kids to school in her pajamas and brings a box of cold cereal for you to munch on in the car so you don't starve. You don't seem to mind.
Ugh. It was a rough evening for Makenna. I was getting the kids ready for bed when Makenna fell while climbing on the counter in our bathroom trying to reach something. She came in crying and gushing blood everywhere. I knew immediately that she was going to need stitches on her chin. Unfortunately Allen had already left for YM and part of the activity was supposed to be at our house a little while later. I called him and he made arrangements for the activity and came home to take Kenna to the ER. She received 5 stitches in her chin and was super brave. They got home at about 1:00 a.m. but she was a trooper.
It's the most wonderful time of the year! Or the worst time of the year if you're on a perpetual diet like I am! I love Girl Scout cookies and had a really hard time finding someone to order through this year. I finally ordered through the coworker of a friend! I just have to get my Thin Mint and Samoas fix once a year! Yummy!
This might just be my favorite picture ever! As an avid reader I want so badly for my kids to love reading as much as I do. Carter is a GREAT reader but sometimes lacks the strong desire to read on his own. We tried reading the Magic Treehouse series about a year ago but he just wasn't interested in them. We tried again a couple weeks ago and he is eating them up! HOORAY! He usually reads an entire book every day. Happy, happy!
Yay! New iphone! After my phone died I did some research and found I could sell my broken iphone on ebay for way more than I paid for it! I finally got around to listing it last week and it sold TWO minutes after I listed it. Awesome! I used the money to get myself a new phone this week and feel so much more connected. I didn't have any of my contact info for friends, could not send or receive texts, and did not have access to my calendar on the phone that I was using until I sold my old phone. Also very happy to have my GPS back!
Today we took the kids swimming at the Rec Center. It was such a fun time, as always. The center has some fun slides and zero entry kids pool that the kiddos love. They also have a huge indoor heated pool that we spent most of our time in. Addie loves being thrown up in the air into the water and counts 1-2-3 over and over until you throw her. The big kids loved playing the "jail" game that we made up. A great time was had by all.
Tonight we went on a double date with some new friends, the Worthens. We had a fabulous time with them and tried a new fun restaurant, The Standard Diner. It was featured on the Food Network a few years and go and the food was delicious, "upscale" diner food. This sign was on the wall as we walked into the restaurant and we thought it was hilarious and had to be the pic of the day!
We spent the better part of the day at the doctors office today. I was able to squeeze Carter in for an appointment after his sore throat and fever had not subsided at all over night. After waiting in the lobby for 90 minutes we were finally called back. Carter was swabbed for strep and it immediately showed positive. I took him home, put him back to bed and loaded him up on antibiotics. Hopefully he is on the mend by tomorrow!
Carter woke up in the middle of the night with a very sore throat and fever. I kept him home from school to see how he would do during the day. He fell asleep on the couch and slept for 5 hours and I knew he was really sick. Poor guy could not swallow anything and felt horrible for the entire day. I knew he was really sick when he was able to sleep through the girls running around all afternoon and me making dinner and even vacuuming the floor!
Makenna loves playing with my point and shoot camera! When I downloaded my most recent batch of pictures I found about 20 silly pictures she had taken of herself. I decided to forgo the picture I was planning to use for today and use one of the ones she took instead. Such a fun, silly girl.
Tonight for our weekly homemade cookies I made chocolate cookies and filled them with Cream Cheese Peanut Butter frosting. Yum! They were so delicious and are a definite diet buster. Luckily we shared them with some friends so we won't be eating all of them ourselves.
Happy 5th Birthday to my darling girl Makenna! We started the day by having her requested breakfast - donuts from KrispyKreme and fruit. Afterwards she opened the presents from the family - she got a bathrobe, lipgloss set, Leapster, Leapster game, Princess cookbook and fun gifts from her grandparents. We spent the morning getting ready for her Pinakalicious party. She had a great time at her party and then we went to mall to get her ears pierced. I was so proud of how well she did and did not even cry. We finished the day with dinner at Chick-Fil-A.
We LOVE having Makenna in our family and love her so much.
Today was Makenna's day to be the special person at preschool. She has been looking forward to it for weeks and was so happy that Allen was able to work out his schedule to go with her. She saw this idea in the Family Fun magazine and begged me to make it to take for the snack for school. I think it turned out darling and will definitely make it again!
More party preparation today! We went and got all the food for the party today and had such a fun time walking up and down the aisles at the grocery store to find pink food. We ended up with pink marshmallows, strawberry wafer cookies, pink lemonade, various candy, pink cake/frosting, pink cream cheese for bagels, pink pretzels and pink applesauce!
Today I spent a big part of the day getting ready for Makenna's birthday party this weekend. I saw the idea to make clay cupcake charms forever ago and decided to make some as part of the party favor for her Pinkalicious party. Having never worked with Polymer clay before, I was surprised at how easy these were to put together. And luckily we both love how they turned out!
Makenna has been working really hard on her handwriting lately. I thought she did such a good job writing her name and she wanted me to take a picture of how good she has gotten at writing nice and neatly. Sigh. She is growing up way too fast!
Today the girls got a fun package from their cousins Lauren and Molly who live in Mississippi! They sent a bunch of extra beads that they got from their town MardiGras parade. They were THRILLED and wore their beads all day long. Thanks Lauren, Molly and Aunt Meg for the fun surprise!
One of the best forms of punishment at our house is having the kids do extra chores when they do not obey. This afternoon Carter did not turn off the Wii when I asked him to and ended up having to vacuum the main floor for his extra chore. He was pretty mad at me for taking this picture when he was so unhappy about his punishment. Oh well, just keeping it real!
Addie is our child who LOVES to read - more so than either of the big kids at this age. This is the pile of books we read before bed tonight. Most of the books were read at least twice before she moved on to the next one. She would have just kept going but it was past her bedtime. I hope she always loves to read as much as she does right now!
Today Makenna's friend Abby spent the day with us while her parents were out of town. We had a fun day going to see the Princess and the Frog again at the dollar movie. For dinner I made dinner and dessert crepes in honor of France and the Winter Olympics. The kids colored French flags and pictures of the Eiffel Tower. We read a couple of Madeline books before bed. The kids loved learning about a new culture and especially loved the dessert crepes!
